About the Island

The island of Vir is located in northern Dalmatia, approximately 25 km from Zadar, and is one of the 300 islands of the Zadar archipelago. It has an area of 22.3 km², a length of about 10.5 km, and a width of up to 4.5 km. Its highest point, Bandira, reaches an altitude of 112 meters and offers views of the surrounding sea and neighboring islands of Pag, Ugljan, and Molat.

Vir has approximately 3,000 permanent residents, but during the summer season, their number increases to 20–25 thousand due to tourists who come here for the sun, sea, and peaceful atmosphere.

History of the Island

The history of Vir dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by finds from the time of the Illyrian tribes that inhabited the island. Later, Roman settlements were established here, and during the Middle Ages, Vir became a strategically important point due to its location at the entrance to the Zadar Channel.

In the 14th century, it was administered by the Zadar nobility, and during the Venetian rule, it acquired its typical stone houses and defensive structures. The Kaštelina fortress, which is now one of the most important historical monuments of the island, also dates from this period.

The Bridge that Connects Vir to the Mainland

The island is connected to the mainland via the Privlaka Strait by a bridge, which was built in 1976 and fundamentally changed life on the island. Thanks to it, Vir has become one of the most accessible Croatian islands – without the need for a ferry or boat transport.

The 378 m long bridge enabled the development of tourism, better supply and daily connections with the mainland, especially with the towns of Nin and Zadar. Thanks to this accessibility, Vir retains its island character today, but with the convenience that every visitor will appreciate.

Venetian Fortress Kaštelina

In close proximity to the resort, the remains of ramparts and towers of a stone fortress are hidden, built here in the 16th century by the Venetians to protect the island from pirates. Below the fortress lies Plaža Sapavac beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
